ON HEARING THE TOLL OF A BELL FOR THE FUNERAL OF A NEAR AND
DEAR FRIEND.
Hark! you my friends, that doleful sound,
That pierces in my ear,
It speaks the loss of some dear friend,
And now demands our tears.
He's gone from us, it's all we know,
His fate we cannot tell;
While we are musing here below,
He far from us does dwell.
Perhaps in glorious seats above
Or suck in endless pain;
It's not our tears nor yet our love,
Can bring him here again.
O! may we number so our days,
That we may never fear,
But always ready to obey,
When we the summons hear. J. B.
